The Great Gatsby Essay
That the image of innocence, namely the women’s white dresses, is more important than the women’s actual characters themselves. The women’s dresses keep their reputations afloat. The dresses also act as if they have been blown about on something larger than their own power, as if they have more mobility than the women wearing them do. Appearance of clothing, of status, has more motion, more substance than flesh or character in this world. The speaker’s choice of focusing on the details of the dresses, before the women’s names and appearances underlines this fact.
The tone and syntax of the passage is thus cool, but the choice of details is sensual yet oddly detached. Even the curtains of the house seem to have more power than the women have. The curtains “whip and snap” in the wind as if someone is wielding them like a weapon. The imagery suggests even the inanimate objects of the house can cause violence. The final suggestion of the groaning picture, rather than the person groaning near the picture, further underlines the importance of the material over the personal. The picture might as well be speaking, as opposed to a real human being.
